WHY IT'S GOOD TO HAVE AN INSTAGRAM THEME

Monday, 6 May 2019

So many people think having an Instagram theme is restricting, but since choosing a colour palette that suits my photography, personality, style, and niche, my Instagram experience has been so much more positive, and here's why...

For years I thought that if I adopted an 'Instagram theme' it would feel like a chore, and make Instagram less enjoyable. I thought that I'd have to be careful about what I posted to ensure that everything was perfect, and nothing fell out of place. But having a theme, editing technique, or preset, really isn't as restricting as you may first think.

I'm a little bit late to this whole preset party, but since purchasing a few presets from Etsy the other week on a whim, I'm a total convert!

When I started blogging almost six years ago, 'themes' were practically non-existent. Everyone opted for a kitsch and vintage vibe, or a clean-cut and fresh vibe – themes and editing techniques were limited. For the year prior to investing in some presets (from April/May last year to not too long ago), I was using the free version of VSCO, which was absolutely fine, but my feed still wasn't consistent, and it looked too dull and erratic.

I downloaded a selection of mobile presets for Lightroom. I got some pink hued ones, and some creamy hued ones too – all of which are SO stunning, and easy to use. I imagined that having a theme would be more hard work, but you apply the preset to your photo, and the brightness/shadows don't even need to be adjusted! It's AMAZING how stress-free having a 'theme' on Instagram is!

Instagram for me is about being REAL... I like to post a mix of #OOTDs (on the actual day of wearing them), combined with outfits shot a few weeks prior (if they accompany a blog post). I also like to post real life photos – coffee shots, nature, pretty houses, mirror selfies, candid shots of me, and a whole bunch of other stuff too.

Although I have a theme/certain presets I like to use, I still want to keep it real. Themes don't have to all be extremely intricate, planned out, and constructed perfectly. They can be real and still look beautiful.

My new Instagram theme is like looking through a pair of rose-tinted glasses, and I absolutely adore it. I never ever wanted to commit to a theme, but ever since taking the plunge I've fallen in love with Instagram all over again.

I currently alternate between 2 or 3 presets, a mix of pink hues and cream hues – each of them perfect for the feed I want to curate.

Etsy have some AMAZING presets.. they have THOUSANDS in fact! So if you're looking for a themed feed that involved minimal editing, thought, and fear of things 'not matching' – then I highly recommend investing in a pack of presets or using a select few filters for all of your posts.

Here's how my feed looked in April...

Let me know your thoughts on themed accounts/accounts that use a preset.. is the preset life for you? And what do you think of my newly vamped up feed? Let me know below!
